Lava lamps have fascinated and mesmerized onlookers for decades. Combining the warm glow of colorful light and the graceful interaction of lava and gravity, lava lamps cast a relaxing aura about any room. Interestingly, according to principles of Feng Shui, Lava Lamps can incite passion.
The proper name for Lava Lamps are Lava Brand Motion Lamps. Many people through the years have shortened the name to Lava Lamps. The first generation lava lamp was an Astro Lamp, which was launched in 1963 by Edward Craven-Walker in Britain. The Astro Lamp became known as the Lava Brand Motion Lamp when the American rights to the lamp were bought by two Americans in 1965 and they brought the Astro Lamp to America and renamed it. Production of the newly named Lava Lamps took off in Chicago, IL.
Lava Lamp sales peaked in the late 60's. By the early 70's their popularity died off and by 1976 lava lamp sales were down to 200 lamps per week. Lava Lamp sales began to rebound in the late 80's, and have been growing ever since. More Lava Lamps were sold in the 90's than in the 60's, 70's, and 80's combined. Though the popularity of Lava Lamps has seen it's 'ups and downs', their timeless appeal endures...
